A City of Heritage, Innovation, and Flavor

Completed in 1319, this huge Romanesque-style building occupies a central position in the heart of the city: Piazza Grande, the primary gathering spot for Modena’s residents.

Thanks to its  stunning and breathtaking architecture it has earned it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beside the Cathedral there is another of the symbols of this city: the Ghirlandina Tower.

With its 86.12 meters in height, the tower was designed to compete with the “sister” towers of Bologna and recalls the romantic style of the façade of the Duomo.Today, visitors can climb hundreds stairs to reach the tower’s summit and enjoy at the panoramic views of the city and the picturesque Modena countryside.

The Magnificent Ducal Palace

In Piazza Roma, another meeting place in Modena and a historical square, stands the Ducal Palace. Constructed in 1400, the building originally served as the residence of the Este Dukes of Modena.

Its baroque façade, the majesty of the building, and the colonnades and arch that stand out in the central part of the façade, making it one of the city’s most splendid buildings.

Presently, the palace accommodates one of the sites of the Italian Military Academy and frequently hosts important military ceremonies.
